Crude steel production rises in the Middle East and North Africa in April

As of April 2025, crude steel production in the Middle East increased by 2.2%, reaching 5.2 million tons. However, in the first four months of the year, the region’s production declined by 5.7%, falling to 18.4 million tons.

In the MENA region, Egypt was the largest crude steel producer in April, with 831,000 tons. However, this figure represents a 7.2% decrease compared to the same month last year. Saudi Arabia ranked second with a production volume of 757,000 tons, reflecting a 6.1% decline. Algeria came in third with 460,000 tons and recorded a notable year-on-year increase of 31.4%.

Middle East crude steel production reached 18.4 million tons in January–April

In the first four months of 2025, total crude steel production in Arab countries rose by 1.5% to 13.9 million tons. During this period, production in the Gulf countries dropped by 2.8% to 6.64 million tons, while North African countries increased their output by 6.5% to 6.17 million tons. In the Eastern Mediterranean, production remained stable at 1.14 million tons. Meanwhile, Iran produced 3.3 million tons of crude steel in April—a 4.6% increase—yet its production for January–April decreased by 8% to 10.6 million tons.

Significant growth in North Africa

In April 2025, total crude steel production in Africa rose by 6.5% to reach 6.2 million tons, accounting for 44% of Arab crude steel output. This growth was driven not only by Algeria’s significant production increase but also by the strong performance of Morocco, Libya, and Tunisia.
