Chinese company Maolong New Materials and Moroccan Sinam Group (Global Steel) have announced a strategic partnership to build a new green steel plant in Morocco employing HIsmelt technology. The agreement was announced on August 29.
HIsmelt is a smelting process that allows for the production of high-quality molten pig iron from iron ore. It enables direct smelting using non-coking coal without the need for traditional blast furnace processes, reducing environmental impact while offering operational flexibility. This technology is considered a significant step toward low-carbon, environmentally friendly green steel production.
Sinam Group highlighted Maolong New Materials’ achievements in production efficiency and cost control, noting that the partnership brings together the strengths of both parties. The collaboration aims to combine Morocco’s rich mineral resources with the industrial expertise of the Chinese company.
Under the agreement, Sinam Group and its affiliates will supply over 600,000 tons of Moroccan phosphate ore annually, while Maolong New Materials will provide integrated solutions leveraging its HIsmelt expertise and the experience of its technical partners.
Experts note that this partnership will help expand the international adoption of HIsmelt technology and strengthen Morocco’s regional supply chains.
