According to statistics of the General Administration of Customs of China, China imported about 30.91 million tons of coal in December last year, a decrease of 4.3% compared to the previous month and 0.14% compared to the same month a year ago.
The decrease in coal imports was mainly due to the slowing industrial activity in China caused by COVID-19 cases, which increased after the government eased epidemic controls.
With the reopening of factories and the prospect of economic recovery, China's coal imports were expected to rebound after the New Year holiday.
In the whole of 2022, China's coal imports amounted to 293.2 million tons, down 9.2% year-on-year.
