British Steel may close coke ovens

British Steel's decision to close its coke ovens to reduce the amount of carbon emission allowances it must purchase is considered to pose a major challenge to the nearby Liberty Merchant Bar (LMB), which powered by coke offgases from the integrated plant. British Steel supplies Liberty Steel both coke gas and billet. According to the information received, the coke ovens may be stopped by the company in June. It is thought that this decision made by British Steel may result in the loss of more than 800 jobs.
