The new facility, which was commissioned on May 12, 2026, will produce both conventional steel grades and high quality slabs.
As part of the project, Primetals Technologies supplied the mechanical equipment together with comprehensive Level 1 and Level 2 automation systems, while also providing construction and implementation services. The company stated that close cooperation with Baosteel throughout the project, from the design phase to commissioning, ensured that the installation was completed efficiently and according to schedule.
Advanced design supports high quality slab production
The new No. 6 continuous slab caster combines Primetals Technologies' advanced mechanical design concepts with the latest automation technologies and digital solutions, enabling the production of both standard steel grades and high quality slabs.
Advanced simulation and modeling systems used during the design phase helped determine the optimum roller geometry, significantly reducing mold level fluctuations. This allows higher casting speeds while improving overall production efficiency.
The facility also integrates several intelligent process and quality control solutions, including the Dynacs 3D dynamic secondary cooling system and the DynaGap 3D dynamic soft reduction system. These technologies are expected to raise slab quality to industry leading standards.
Intelligent systems ensure stable and efficient production
To meet the precision requirements of high quality steel production, the caster has been equipped with Primetals Technologies' proven technologies. The Smart Mold cassette type mold system operates together with the DynaWidth mold width adjustment system, enabling fast and flexible transitions between different slab dimensions.
The Mold Expert system supports stable and reliable casting operations, while the Quality Expert system monitors the entire production process, predicts product quality, and contributes to continuous process improvement.
In addition, the Eco Star spiral roller technology significantly extends the service life of segment rollers while ensuring high precision during dynamic soft reduction. The company also noted that these rollers increase the slab surface temperature after leaving the horizontal segment, significantly reducing energy consumption during the reheating process before hot rolling.
Baosteel and Primetals Technologies strengthen long term cooperation
As part of the decades long partnership between Baosteel and Primetals Technologies, more than 20 continuous casting machines have been successfully commissioned to date. The commissioning of the No. 6 caster is one of several projects recently completed by the two companies, further strengthening their strategic partnership and reflecting their mutual confidence in each other's technological capabilities and services.
Primetals Technologies has previously supplied new continuous casting machines and carried out modernization projects at Baosteel Zhanjiang, Baosteel Meishan, and Maanshan Iron & Steel.
