The launch was delayed several times due to the coronavirus-related pandemic. Construction costs increased by 10-20% compared to the originally planned budget of 350 million euros.
The facility with an annual capacity of 205 thousand tons is expected to replace the still operating Boehler Edelstahl facility in Kapfenberg. They will work together as the new facility reaches design capacity.
Construction of Kapfenberg began in mid-2018. Testing of the plant and production lines began in July 2022. Voestalpine plans to manufacture tool steel products for the aerospace, energy and automotive industries. Unlike Boehler Edelstahl, the new facility will be able to produce powders for 3D printing.
Voestalpine also published a report on its financial performance for the first nine months of the 2022-2023 fiscal year. The net profit of the company in this period was recorded as 864 million euros, which is 24% more than the same months of the 2021-2022 fiscal year.
