Asian dominance in EU flat product imports

In 2023, the European Union experienced a significant shift in flat product imports, with Eastern Asian countries emerging as dominant suppliers to the EU market.

Asian dominance in EU flat product imports

Asian countries, particularly South Korea, India, Taiwan, Vietnam, and Japan, significantly increased their exports of flat products to the EU. South Korea led the pack with 3.1 million tons, marking a yearly increase of 9.3%, followed by India with 2.73 million tons, registering a 15.5% yearly increase.

Taiwan secured the third position with 2.38 million tons, showing an 11.6% yearly increase. Vietnam also demonstrated substantial growth with an export of 2.12 million tons, reflecting a 36.5% yearly increase, while Japan recorded 1.75 million tons of exports, marking a notable 23.2% yearly increase, solidifying its position in the European market.

The increase in exports from Eastern Asian countries, excluding China, is attributed to their ability to offer more competitive prices, which appeal to EU consumers. As a result, quotas allocated to Asian countries are quickly filled. Concerns arise over potential anti-dumping tariffs by the European Union due to generally lower prices of Asian flat products compared to European producers.

This trend highlights shifting dynamics in the global steel market and the growing influence of Eastern Asian countries on the European Union's flat product imports. As competition intensifies, EU policymakers may need to consider strategies to ensure fair competition while balancing trade relations within the market.
