ArcelorMittal restarted the Galva 5 line at its Flémalle facility in Belgium

ArcelorMittal has restarted the Galva 5 hot-dip galvanizing line at its Flémalle facility in Belgium after a four-year shutdown.

ArcelorMittal restarted the Galva 5 line at its Flémalle facility in Belgium

The restart in question aims to strengthen the company’s industrial presence in Belgium while increasing the supply of thicker-gauge metal-coated steel across Europe.

Following the acquisition of the line in July 2025, the company launched a comprehensive renovation and modernization program. Within this scope, roof refurbishment works were carried out, while coil feeding and uncoiling equipment were serviced. The pickling section and zinc bath were fully restored. In addition, the plant’s digital infrastructure was modernized, updating production processes.

Human factors and occupational safety were central to the project. Approximately 70 employees—many of whom had previously worked on this line or in similar facilities—were employed at the Galva 5 line. During the commissioning process, extensive training programs were implemented, and strict inspections focused on ensuring safe working conditions from day one.

With the Galva 5 line back in operation, ArcelorMittal has regained a production line in Belgium capable of supplying metal-coated steel in the heavier product segment. The line processes hot-rolled coils produced at the Ghent facility and converts them into galvanized products, which are then shipped to major industrial customers across Europe.

The produced materials are designed for use in various industrial and automotive applications, particularly road safety equipment and HVAC (heating, ventilation, and air conditioning) systems. Located in the heart of Europe, the Flémalle facility aims to offer customers shorter delivery times and more flexible service options.

From a technical perspective, the Galva 5 line can process hot-rolled materials up to 6.35 mm in thickness and 1,880 mm in width. Its integrated pickling system shortens production time while enabling compatibility with high-strength steels and different types of metal coatings. This setup also contributes to ArcelorMittal’s low-CO₂ steel solutions.

Company officials stated that restarting a line that had been idle for four years in less than 10 months is a significant achievement, and emphasized that Galva 5 will strongly meet both customer demands and high quality standards.
