Electricity prices increased by 25% in June compared to May, pushing up production costs. This increase is expected to continue in July. Although European steel producers observed an improvement in apparent consumption in July, they were forced to increase prices due to rising costs.
On the other hand, global rebar prices have remained stable in most regions since early July. However, the European market experienced price decreases, particularly in Northern Europe and Italy. In Northern Europe, prices decreased by EUR 10 per ton between June 28 and July 19 to EUR 620-630 per ton. In Italy, the decline was more pronounced, with prices falling by EUR 30 per tonne to EUR 580-600. Italian rebar prices are currently trading at EUR 610.
In the first half of 2024, steel production in the EU was recorded at 56.1 million tons, down 0.1% yearly. In June, however, this figure increased by 1.8% yearly to 11.7 million tons. Global steel production remained stable at 954.6 million tons during January-June 2023.
