ArcelorMittal Hunedoara halts production indefinitely due to high energy costs

ArcelorMittal Hunedoara, operating in Romania, has decided to indefinitely suspend steel production, citing high energy costs, intense import pressure, and limited state support.

ArcelorMittal Hunedoara halts production indefinitely due to high energy costs

The company announced in a statement to the Bucharest Stock Exchange that the decision would take effect as of September 5, 2025.

Company representatives said in a statement on Tuesday evening: “This decision, although difficult, reflects the company’s ongoing assessment of the deteriorating market, which continues to be shaped by persistently high electricity costs, limited state support, and increasing competitive pressure from imports. These factors have significantly impacted the plant’s competitiveness in local, European, and international markets. There has been a sharp decline in the order book, with volumes down by about 60% compared to 2024. This further reinforced the necessity of a prolonged shutdown.”

ArcelorMittal Hunedoara had announced a day earlier that it would suspend production between September 5 and 30, stating that during this period, employees would receive technical unemployment benefits covering 75% of their base salaries. However, with the new announcement, it was declared that this measure would be extended indefinitely.

The company emphasized that it would closely monitor market developments and reassess its decision as conditions change. It also stated that discussions with social partners would be initiated immediately.

At the end of last year, ArcelorMittal Hunedoara employed 545 people.
