The new production unit, named the Pickling Line and Tandem Cold Mill (PLTCM), was inaugurated by Japan’s Ambassador to India, Keiichi Ono.
With an annual production capacity of 2 million tons, the new line aims to significantly enhance the company’s capabilities in the automotive segment. It was stated that the facility operates with an advanced system integrating the pickling of hot-rolled steel and the subsequent production of high-quality cold-rolled sheets. This enables the production of high value-added and precision steel products used in the automotive industry.
The new production line focuses particularly on Advanced High Strength Steel (AHSS). In addition, high-performance steel grades commonly used in the automotive industry—such as galvannealed (GA), galvanised (GI), and press hardened steel (PHS)—will also be produced on this line. The company emphasized that these products are critical for vehicle body safety and lightweighting objectives.
According to the statement by AM/NS India, the new line will also enable the production of certain specialized and patented steel products for the first time in India. These products were developed by the company’s parent shareholders, ArcelorMittal and Nippon Steel, using advanced technology solutions.
One of the key features of the facility is its high level of automation, advanced process control systems, and integrated production structure aligned with global quality standards. It was noted that the production line has been designed to meet the requirements of world-class automotive manufacturers and has the capability to provide end-to-end solutions.
It was stated that the steel produced on the new line will be used in vehicles compliant with Bharat NCAP (BNCAP) safety standards, contributing to safer, lighter, and more environmentally friendly vehicle designs.
AM/NS India CEO Dilip Oommen stated that the company continues its investments in line with the “Make in India” and “Aatmanirbhar Bharat” goals. Oommen noted that by leveraging the advanced technology and engineering expertise of ArcelorMittal and Nippon Steel, they have established a world-class automotive steel production infrastructure in India.
He also emphasized that the PLTCM investment is a key part of the company’s growth plans and will reduce import dependency by increasing domestic production capacity in India. The new facility is also expected to strengthen supply chain resilience and support the automotive sector’s transition toward more sustainable production.
Japan’s Ambassador to India, Keiichi Ono, stated during the inauguration that Japan’s advanced technology has made a significant contribution to high-quality steel production in India. He added that economic cooperation between Japan and India has entered a new phase under the “Make in India, Make for the World” vision and that both countries have complementary strengths.
AM/NS India also announced that this investment is part of its approximately ₹60,000 crore expansion program at the Hazira facility. It was stated that both upstream and downstream as well as supporting production facilities are being developed under this investment.
The company further noted that it has a crude steel production capacity of 9 million tons in India, along with a pellet production capacity of 20 million tons, and that work is ongoing to establish a new integrated steel plant with a capacity of 8.2 million tons in Andhra Pradesh.
