On Sunday, June 15, 2025, during a ceremony at the Ministry of Energy, Mines and Renewable Energies, a memorandum of cooperation was signed between Sonarem and the Malaysian Lion Group. The ceremony was attended by high ranking Algerian officials and the Malaysian Ambassador to Algeria, Rizany Irwan Muhamad Mazian.

The memorandum covers joint investments, exchange of know-how, development of a local workforce and processing of resources in Algeria, as well as the assessment of opportunities for the exploration and exploitation of mineral resources such as gold, copper and manganese.

Immediately following this development, a working meeting was held on Monday, June 16, 2025, chaired by Adel Khemane, CEO of the National Steel Holding Company (SNS), with the participation of Lion Group officials. The meeting was attended by Lion Group CEO Tan Sri William Cheng, Malaysian Ambassador Mazian and senior executives from both sides.

During the meetings, partnership and investment opportunities for the steel sector were discussed, while promising industrial projects between the two countries were discussed. Cooperation opportunities were evaluated to strengthen the industrial infrastructure and support economic development in Algeria and Malaysia.

Algerian officials stated that these contacts will pave the way for the establishment of a permanent partnership between the two countries based on mutual trust in strategic sectors, especially iron and steel.
