Dempsey stated, "Greenhouse gas emissions from power plants in the United States do not contribute significantly to climate change, which is essentially a global problem. These emissions have declined significantly since 2005 and are expected to continue to do so in the period ahead."
Noting that the current regulations impose burdensome, costly and unproven obligations, Dempsey emphasized that this could disrupt innovative solutions that are already in place. "As the American steel industry, we are heavily dependent on an affordable and reliable supply of electricity. That's why we support EPA's adoption of more flexible and market-driven approaches rather than burdensome federal requirements. This approach will not only protect our industry, but also the overall grid reliability of the United States."
AISI has previously submitted formal comments to the EPA expressing concerns about the proposed regulations. In particular, the institute noted the potential negative impact on industry of strict federal rules in the electricity sector.
