Asam Hussain, CEO of Arabian Gulf Steel Industries (AGSI), gave an interview to CEO MENA, a publication of Gulf News, where he spoke about his leadership philosophy, sustainability targets, and the evolving industrial landscape in the region.
Hussain emphasized that even in a traditional industry like steel, transformation is possible. He said that AGSI embraces a management approach that challenges conventional thinking and puts innovation at its core:
“In a very traditional industry, we've chosen not to follow the well-worn path. My leadership approach is grounded in the belief that progress doesn't come from doing the same things more efficiently, it comes from doing them differently, with purpose. At AGSI, we challenge legacy thinking and aim to shift the paradigm by finding new, better ways to create value for our stakeholders. We've embedded a culture of innovation across the organisation, not just through technology, but through mindset,”
He stated that AGSI has established the world’s first certified carbon-neutral steel plant — a milestone he described as not only an environmental achievement, but also a long-term strategic move. He also revealed that the company plans to expand with a new rolling mill in Abu Dhabi, aiming to scale up production to 1.2 million metric tons of carbon-neutral steel by 2026, in line with a demand-driven, localized model.
Touching on customer relations, Hussain noted the importance of clarity and trust:
“Customer loyalty begins with trust, and trust is built through clarity, consistency, and shared purpose. At AGSI, we g beyond delivering high-quality steel We help our partners build in a fundamentally better way. The best way to achieve our targets is to help our customers achieve theirs, Net Zero Steel alows our clients to meet their decarbonisation goals, reduce embodied carbon in their projects, and contribute sustainable built environment.”
Finally, he addressed supply chain vulnerabilities, underlining AGSI’s commitment to a localized, circular production model. He said reducing reliance on imports and offering sustainable, local solutions is a core priority for the company.
