According to information received, the Saint Kitts and Nevis-flagged vessel Luni collided with another commercial ship several days ago. Following the collision, the vessel began taking on water as structural damage to its hull worsened, eventually breaking into two sections and sinking in the northern part of the Strait of Hormuz.
All 23 crew members aboard the vessel were rescued by search and rescue teams. The ship was carrying approximately 43,000 tonnes of steel billets.
According to market sources cited by SteelRadar, the steel billets onboard are reportedly owned by Turkish companies. No official statement has yet been issued by the parties concerned regarding this information.
Following the incident, security measures were increased for maritime traffic in the Strait of Hormuz, while vessel movements in the area experienced disruptions.
The sinking of Luni occurred at a time when geopolitical tensions in the region and security concerns surrounding maritime transportation have intensified. Potential delays affecting steel and other bulk cargo shipments are being closely monitored by market participants.
