SteelRadar's data compiled from the Turkish Statistical Institute (TÜİK) reveals that Türkiye's scrap imports in 2023 decreased by 12.8% compared to the previous year to 17.1 million tons. In 2022, total scrap imports totaled 19.6 million tons.
In December, Türkiye imported 1,257.92 t of scrap in 2022, up 32% to 1,660.29 t in the same month of 2023. Most scrap imports were from EU countries in the month under review, while imports from Russia increased by 411102.9%. In December 2022, 18 tons of imports were recorded from Russia, while this figure increased to 73,663 tons in 2023.
In 2023, the highest scrap imports were recorded in March, while the lowest imports were recorded in September. In 2022, the highest imports were recorded in January and the lowest in December.
Europe is in first place
The European Union countries ranked first in the list of countries that Türkiye imported the most scrap in 2023. While Türkiye imported 11,251,668 tons of scrap from Europe in 2022, this figure decreased by 7.6% to 10,399,559 tons in 2023.
The US, which ranked second in the scrap import ranking, imported 4,495,610 tons with an increase of 13.7%. The United Kingdom ranked third with 1,283,223 tons, a decrease of 30% compared to the previous year.
Scrap imported from Iraq in 2023
On the other hand, Venezuela ranked fourth among the countries that Türkiye imports the most scrap from, with 678,383 tons of imports, down by 32.8%.
The increase in scrap imports from Russia stands notable. Russia, which exported 449,652 tons of scrap in 2022, exported 496,376 tons of scrap in 2023, an increase of 10.4%.
Iraq experienced a remarkable increase in Türkiye's scrap imports. While there were no scrap imports from Iraq in 2022, this figure was recorded as 746 tons in 2023. Northern Macedonia, on the other hand, recorded a significant growth, increasing its scrap imports by 114.7%.
However, the countries where Türkiye's imports decreased the most during the period in question were Ukraine with a 99.4% decrease, Georgia with a 98.4% decrease and Moldova with a 59% decrease.
