The geothermal energy installed capacity in Turkey reached 1650 megawatts as of the end of July. Having a share of 11.5% in the global geothermal energy installed power, Turkey ranks fourth in the world and first in Europe in terms of installed capacity.

In Turkey, which is located on an active tectonic belt, electricity generation from geothermal first started in 1975 with public investments, while the first power plant built by the private sector was commissioned in 2006.

Geothermal energy capacity was 82 megawatts in 2006, 170 megawatts in 2007, 311 megawatts in 2013, 624 megawatts in 2015, 821 megawatts in 2016, 1064 megawatts in 2017, 1282 megawatts in 2018, 1514 megawatts in 2019. megawatts.

The installed power in geothermal energy reached 1650 megawatts at the end of July this year, and the number of power plants reached 63.

According to the data of the International Renewable Energy Agency, Turkey ranked fourth in the world and first in Europe with its geothermal energy capacity of 1613 megawatts at the end of 2020. As of the end of last year, 11.5 percent of the global geothermal energy capacity, which was 14,50 megawatts, is located in Turkey.

In the global geothermal installed power, the USA ranks first with 14 thousand 50 megawatts, followed by Indonesia with 2 thousand 231 megawatts and the Philippines with 1928 megawatts.
