The signing is seen as a strategic move by the Greater Lincolnshire Combined County Authority (GLCCA) to support domestic producers and strengthen supply chains in England. In this context, it is aimed to maximize the use of UK-produced steel in publicly funded infrastructure projects.
The UK Steel Charter, developed under industry leadership, encourages organizations to adopt best practices in procurement processes while aiming to increase domestic steel producers’ access to large-scale projects and enhance their competitiveness.
Speaking at the signing ceremony, Mayor Jenkyns emphasized that this step not only represents support for British Steel, but is also important for protecting local employment and strengthening the national industry. Stating that public investments should serve national interests, Jenkyns noted that increasing the use of domestic steel would both support producers and strengthen local economies.
UK Steel Director General Gareth Stace said the commitment sends a strong message that supporting British steel is critical for employment, growth, and economic resilience. He highlighted that public procurement is one of the most important support mechanisms for the sector.
Meanwhile, Jenkyns also backed the “Save Our Steel, Buy British” campaign, a joint initiative by Community Union and UK Steel. The campaign aims to strengthen the sector by encouraging the use of domestic steel.
Allan Bell stated that steel production forms the backbone of many industrial towns across the UK, emphasizing that supporting domestic steel is crucial both for preserving existing capabilities and for future infrastructure investments.
The signing ceremony held at the Scunthorpe facilities once again highlighted the importance of the steel sector for the regional economy, drawing attention to its impact on employment, investment, and industrial capacity. It was also noted that with this step, GLCCA has joined the institutions supporting stronger participation of domestic producers in public tenders.
