GravitHy and EDF signed an agreement for electricity supply

Based in the south of France, GravitHy has signed an agreement with EDF Renewables to secure part of the electricity supply for a low-carbon direct reduced iron (DRI) and hot bricket iron (HBI) production facility in Fos-sur-Mer.

GravitHy, an active player in the development of the DRI market, is developing a project to build France's first low-carbon DRI/HB1 production plant in Fos-sur-Mer. As part of this project, it was announced that it has reached an agreement with EDF for a Contract for the Allocation of Nuclear Generation (CAPN) to guarantee electricity supply. The low-carbon DRI/HBI to be produced paves the way for a 90% reduction in the CO2 footprint of the iron required to produce steel.

The project has also received the government's support for the transformation of the steel industry through the France 2030 Investment Plan, as well as being selected as a candidate for the 'Premiere Usine' project call by Bpifrance as part of the France 2030 programme.

Sources told SteelRadar that production at the plants, which are expected to have a production capacity of 2 million metric tonnes per year, will be operational from 2027.
