Scrap steel to be processed locally
GM Steel's planned facility, with an investment of approximately USD 500 million, will be built at Wellcamp Business Park near Toowoomba. Locally sourced scrap steel will be processed using Danieli technology to produce 350,000 mt of rebar and coil annually for the construction and infrastructure sectors.
The company stated that approximately 1 million mt of scrap metal was generated in Southeast Queensland in 2024, of which around 750,000 mt was exported overseas. The project aims to redirect this exported scrap toward domestic steel production.
Engineering in 2026, investment decision in 2027
GM Steel received development approvals for the project from the Queensland Government and Toowoomba Regional Council in March 2026. Under the company's current plans, pre engineering and design work will be carried out throughout 2026, followed by a final investment decision in 2027 and an approximately two year construction period. Initial metal production is targeted for 2029.
Once operational, the facility is expected to create approximately 200 direct full time jobs.
