According to the World Direct Reduction Statistics released by Midrex Technologies, global DRI production reached 151 million tons in 2025. Production increased by 10.2 million tons compared with the previous record of 140.8 million tons set in 2024.
Since 2020, global DRI production has increased by 46.2 million tons, or 44%. Growth was driven by increases in production from both gas-based shaft furnaces and coal-based rotary kilns.
MIDREX plants’ production rises to 82.3 million tons
DRI production at MIDREX® plants also reached a record level in 2025. A total of 82.3 million tons of DRI was produced at these plants, marking an increase of 6.1 million tons, or 8%, from the previous record of 76.2 million tons recorded in 2024.
The MIDREX® Process accounted for 54.5% of total global DRI production in 2025. The process also accounted for 81.5% of shaft furnace-based DRI production worldwide.
