The country's crude steel production reached 40.1 million tons in 2021, up 12 percent in the mechanical engineering and construction sectors compared to the previous year.
Despite the increase in production last year, it remained 7 percent below the 2017 level, when 43.3 million tons of crude steel was produced.
Before 2021, crude steel production in the country had decreased for 3 consecutive years. Production of 35.7 million tons in 2020 was recorded as the lowest level since the 2009 financial crisis. Production in 2009 was 32.7 million tons.
Due to the health and economic crisis caused by Kovid-19, while major players in the steel industry such as ArcelorMittal, Thyssenkrupp and Salzgitter were seriously affected by the decrease in demand in the automotive industry, steel manufacturers in Germany implemented a short-term work schedule due to the decreasing demand in 2020.
