Iron ore miner Fortescue Metals said on Monday it would continue to operate its mining sites at the Pilbara, despite the Western Australian government imposing strict border controls that require all businesses to self-isolate for 14 days.
Elizabeth Gades, CEO of Fortescue, said: "Fortescue is working closely with industry and government on the impact of travel restrictions on the resources sector. We commend the Western Australian state government for its decisive actions to spread Covid-19 to our community."
While the majority of the company's workforce is based in Western Australia, the company will work with its non-resident workforce to ensure that site-critical functions, including charter flights allocated directly from the East Coast to operational areas, are not affected, he said.
Meanwhile, shipments of iron ore from Port Hedland, along with mining and processing activities, will continue to maintain Fortescue's all-year production guidance.
Gaines concluded: "We will proactively work with our Fortescue team members to ensure we have the resources available, and we will also work with our contract partners to ensure that our major projects continue in accordance with their project schedules."
