European industry representatives warned that the EU must act and ensure a satisfying supply of magnesium, as magnesium stocks will run out before the end of November, threatening the production of various industries, including the steel industry.
Global annual demand for magnesium is 1.2 million tons. China's magnesium production occupied 87% and consumption 39%. Consumption in European steel industries accounts for 16% of total consumption. Aluminum alloy and casting occupy 45% and 33% respectively.
China's magnesium supply has been suspended or sharply reduced since September due to power outages. 95% of the EU's magnesium demand comes from China. EU industry representatives jointly called for the European Commission and various governments to arrange emergency cooperation with China to alleviate the severe magnesium shortage and its impact on the magnesium supply chain for European industries.
