EU extends duty-free steel imports from Ukraine until 2028

The European Parliament has approved the extension of the customs exemption for steel and iron imports from Ukraine into the European Union until June 5, 2028.

EU extends duty-free steel imports from Ukraine until 2028

The resolution was adopted by 354 votes in favor, 147 against and 53 abstentions. The decision needs to be approved by the European Council and published in the official gazette to enter into force.

European Parliament rapporteur and Swedish MEP Karin Karlsbro emphasized that Ukraine's steel industry is one of the pillars of the country's economy and stated, “This sector continues to produce, despite the fact that many workers are fighting on the front lines and factories have been the target of Russian attacks.”

“The Commission is working on a longer-term solution to provide economic security for EU-Ukraine trade,” the European Parliament Press Service noted in a statement.

The new arrangement aims to provide support to the Ukrainian economy and give domestic industry, which is struggling to survive in war-torn Ukraine, a competitive edge in the EU market.
