Empower New Energy announced that it has obtained an electricity generation license from Kenya’s Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) for a 4 MWp solar power plant and has signed a new 2.5 million USD project agreement with Abyssinia Group of Industries, East Africa’s largest steel producer. The project is expected to prevent approximately 3,500 tons of CO₂ emissions annually, supporting Kenya’s goal of reducing emissions by 32% under the Paris Agreement.
The newly signed 25-year contract covers a 4 MWp solar plant that will be added to Empower New Energy’s existing three projects totaling 5 MWp at Abyssinia’s Awasi steel factory. Once completed, the total installed capacity will reach 9 MWp. The facility is expected to generate about 14 GWh of clean electricity per year, reduce dependence on grid power and diesel generators, and cut annual emissions by more than 7,000 tons.
Terje Osmundsen, CEO of Empower New Energy, stated, “This fourth solar project with Abyssinia Group demonstrates the mutual benefits of our partnership. Together, we are building one of the largest industrial solar portfolios in Kenya.”
Jateen Patel, CEO of Abyssinia Group, added, “Through this collaboration, we gain access to reliable and cost-effective energy, critical for steel production. By expanding our renewable energy portfolio, we reduce costs, cut carbon emissions, and show that heavy industry can lead the transition to cleaner energy.”
The project will be constructed and operated by Nairobi-based solar engineering company Spenomatic, which has successfully delivered Abyssinia’s previous three solar plants. With this new investment, both parties are setting a benchmark for renewable energy adoption in the industrial sector in the region.
