Eco-friendly investment: Shyam Metalics expands Jamuria facility

Shyam Metallics and Energy Ltd (SMEL), one of India's leading steel producers, announced that it has increased its steel production capacity with an expansion at its Jamuria plant. With an investment of around Rs 600 crore (approximately USD 72 million), the company has launched a new blast furnace and a state-of-the-art sinter plant, increasing its annual production capacity from 0.45 million tons per annum (MTPA) to 0.77 MTPA. This modernization improves production efficiency and contributes to environmental sustainability goals.

The upgraded blast furnace features three top-fired stoves, an advanced dry gas cleaning system, and coal dust injection technology, allowing it to handle up to 550 cubic meters of material with high efficiency. In a move toward energy conservation, SMEL has also installed an 18 MW Top Gas Pressure Recovery Turbine at the site. This addition is expected to improve energy recovery by 10%, contributing to the plant's sustainability initiatives and reducing operational costs.

Aligned with SMEL’s commitment to sustainable resource use, the Jamuria facility now operates a sophisticated cooling system that reduces water and electricity consumption by 20%.

The new 1.11 MTPA sinter plant at Jamuria is key in converting iron ore fines into a usable feed for the blast furnace, reducing material costs and waste. By streamlining the sintering process, SMEL aims to further lower production expenses while meeting rising demand in the steel sector.
