Damen signed a steel supply agreement for Colombia’s PES frigate

Dutch shipbuilding giant Damen Naval has signed an agreement with nationwide steel supplier De Jong & Lavino for the supply of all necessary steel materials for the PES (Plataforma Estratégica de Superficie) frigate to be built for the Colombian Navy.

Damen signed a steel supply agreement for Colombia’s PES frigate

The PES frigate, based on Damen’s SIGMA 10514 design, is being built locally at the COTECMAR shipyard in Cartagena, Colombia. The agreement between COTECMAR, Damen Naval, and De Jong & Lavino reflects Damen Naval’s strategy of combining international expertise in design, supply chain, and project management.

Under the agreement, De Jong & Lavino will supply approximately 1,325 tons of steel plates and profiles. The materials will be shipped from the Netherlands to Cartagena under CFR (Cost and Freight) terms. Covering the 2025–2027 period, the agreement consolidates all steel requirements into a single contract, with phased deliveries aligned with COTECMAR’s production schedule.

Damen Naval Project Director Jasper Oreel said, “This is a major step; De Jong & Lavino will provide the steel materials necessary for construction to begin in Colombia.”

De Jong & Lavino COO Martijn Lukassen added, “This naval project demonstrates the strength of our company. We are proud of the commitment shown by our employees. The combined strength of our companies will be a good sign for the future.”

The PES frigate, part of the Plataforma Estratégica de Superficie (PES) program launched by the Colombian Navy in 2015, will replace the Padilla-class frigates and enhance the country’s naval capabilities. The ship will have a length of 107.5 meters and a beam of 14.02 meters, with the first PES frigate scheduled for delivery in 2030.

Finally, Damen has selected Norway-based Kongsberg Maritime to provide the propulsion systems for the PES frigate.
