Coal production continues to decline in Kazakhstan

According to the press service of the Ministry of Industry and Infrastructure Development of the Republic of Kazakhstan, the production volume of coal mines in Kazakhstan continues to decline.

Coal production continues to decline in Kazakhstan

Throughout 2023, coal production decreased by 1 million tonnes year-on-year to 113 million tonnes. In the first four months of 2024, coal production decreased by 2.7 million tonnes compared to the same period in 2023.

Deputy Minister of Industry and Construction Olzhas Saparbekov stated that the decline in production was due to the fall in the cost of fuel on the world market, the development of green energy and logistical difficulties.

In order to increase the share of solid fuel in production, the authorities are considering applying clean coal technologies already used in some European and Asian countries. The ministry plans to co-operate with foreign companies to promote these technologies.

The coal chemical industry can also contribute to the development of coal production. Kazakhstan plans to adopt China's experience in producing high-margin products from solid fuel. The country is creating the necessary conditions to attract Chinese investors and technologies in this area.

Kazakhstan Railways reported that from May 2023 to April 2024, railways in Kazakhstan transported 103 million tonnes of coal.

73.5 million tonnes (71.4% of the total volume) were transported domestically, while 29.5 million tonnes (28.6%) were exported.

Saparbekov emphasised that Kazakhstan lost a significant part of coal exports due to logistical difficulties. The main problems are related to the transport ban in countries bordering Kazakhstan and the shortage of railway wagons.
