ChMK PJSC (Chelyabinsk Iron and Steel Works, part of the Mechel Group) is upgrading its electric arc furnace factory. It is modernizing its gas treatment system and installing bag filters inside the facility. ChMK, which previously upgraded the wet gas cleaning system, is carrying out this activity as part of an environmental agreement concluded with the governor to reduce pollution in the air environment.
Emissions at the plant are expected to be reduced by about 317 tons per year by the time the project is completed.
The dry and wet gas cleaning activity has already been carried out in the past, with blowers replaced, all gas ducts cleaned, furnace roofs replaced and pipelines and pumps updated. As a result, it made it possible to remove gases from the air that would have been generated in the steel processing units outside the furnace during metal melting in electric arc furnaces.
ChMK previously replaced three outdated drafting machines, together with gas lines and old cassette filters. Now it is preparing the ground for another change. To prevent the possibility of fugitive emissions, the company plans to install hoods over the stoves to purify the dust.
These plans are expected to reduce emissions when the dry gas is being cleaned, thereby greatly reducing the environmental damage caused by industrial production factories.
