China's move against the USA: Export ban on rare metals

While the dispute between the USA and China continues over access to high-tech microchips, the Chinese Ministry of Commerce announced that it will control the exports of some metals used extensively in the semiconductor material manufacturing sector.

China's move against the USA: Export ban on rare metals

China has banned the export of some technologies for processing rare metals used in many industries, from electric cars to the defense industry.

The Chinese Ministry of Commerce has included technologies that enable the production of magnets from rare metals in the "Catalog of Export Prohibited and Restricted Technologies".

Magnets produced from rare metals are used in the construction of parts that convert power into motion, such as electric vehicles and wind turbines.

China's step is considered as a move against the export controls and investment restrictions imposed by the USA on chip technologies.

China, which produces approximately 70 percent of rare metals, has 85 percent of global processing capacity.

The Beijing administration decided to restrict the export of gallium and germanium, which are used in chip making, as of August 1.

On the other hand, the export of graphite and its derivative products used in electric vehicle batteries was subject to permission as of December 1.
