China's May crude steel output decreased by 6.9%

China's crude steel output in May 2025 decreased by 6.9% y/y to 86.55 million tons.

China's May crude steel output decreased by 6.9%

China's national crude steel output in May 2025 was 86.55 million tons, decreasing 6.9% y/y to 86.55 million tons, according to China Iron and Steel Association. Daily output stood at 2.79 million tons, a decrease of 2.6% m/m.

Cast iron production decreased by 3.3% y/y to 74.11 million tons in May. Daily cast iron production decreased by 1.2% to 2.39 million tons per day. On the other hand, steel products production increased by 3.4% y/y to 127.43 million tons, but daily production decreased by 1.4% on a monthly basis.

During the January-May period, total crude steel production was 432 million tons, a decrease of 1.7% compared to the same period last year. Daily average production was 2.86 million tons. Cast iron production decreased by 0.1% to 363 million tons in this period, while steel products production increased by 5.2% to 606 million tons.

Moreover, steel mills covered by the main statistics produced a total of 71.94 million tons of crude steel in May. This amount represented a 3.4% y/y decrease, while daily production decreased by 1.6% m/m to 2.32 million tons. Cast iron output was 64.46 million tons, a decrease of 1.2% y/y. Daily production decreased by 0.1% to 2.08 million tons per day.

Production of steel products decreased by 0.4% y/y to 73.16 million tons. Daily production decreased by 0.3% m/m to 2.36 million tons per day.

In the January-May period, crude steel production of steel enterprises covered by the main statistics decreased by 0.1% at 355 million tons, while cast iron production increased by 0.3% at 314 million tons. In the same period, the output of steel products increased by 2.1% to 352 million tons.
