Champion Iron forecasts delays in sales at Bloom Lake mine

Champion Iron forecasts delays in sales at Bloom Lake mine

Canadian iron ore producer Champion Iron forecasts delays in sales from its Bloom Lake mine in Quebec due to disruptions caused by wildfires affecting the railway linking the mine to the port of Sept-Iles. The wildfires, which started on May 28, about 300 km south of Bloom Lake, have caused rail disruptions since May 30, Champion said in a statement.

In the 2022-23 fiscal year ended March 31, Champion sold 10.5 million wet metric tons of iron ore concentrate, an increase of 38% compared to the previous year. Champion is also undertaking a 30-month project to produce 7.5 million tons per year of high-quality direct reduction (DR) pellets with 69% iron content and alumina and silica levels below 1.2%.

Iron Ore of Canada (IOC) was also affected by wildfires and announced that the Quebec North Shore and Labrador Railway will remain suspended until at least June 9.
