Cemvision develops technology to transform steel slag into high-performance cement material

Cemvision develops technology to transform steel slag into high-performance cement material

Cemvision, which develops solutions for the steel industry’s transition to low-carbon production, has announced a pioneering technology that transforms Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) and Basic Oxygen Furnace (BOF) slags into high-performance SCMs. The company stated that its patent-pending process also enables the recovery of valuable metals during the transformation.

While EAF slag has traditionally been underutilized due to its chemical composition and high metal content, Cemvision’s new beneficiation process upgrades it into an SCM that matches or even exceeds Ground Granulated Blast-furnace Slag (GGBS) in terms of glass content and reactivity. Independent testing confirms that Cemvision’s SCM can safely replace GGBS in cement production.

The technology also allows for the recovery of a significant portion of the iron oxide found in slag. Cemvision reports that up to 99% of the iron can be recovered and returned to steel producers, contributing to a circular materials loop and increasing efficiency in steelmaking. Other valuable elements such as chromium can also be extracted through the process.

Cemvision has successfully piloted this innovation in collaboration with world-leading metallurgical research institute Swerim, confirming both technical feasibility and commercial potential.

Cemvision CEO Oscar Hållén commented:

“This is a game-changer not only for the cement industry but for steel producers as well. Our process enables high-performing cement products from materials that would otherwise be treated as waste. With this innovation, we're proving that decarbonization and circularity can go hand in hand, and at scale.”

Dr. Elsayed Mousa, Senior Researcher in Metallurgy at Swerim, added:

“Our trials with Cemvision show a clear pathway to industrialize this process. The chemistry and performance of the resulting materials are not only viable, they're promising enough to set a new benchmark for what green cement can be made from.”
