Canada reacts strongly to tariff change

The Canadian Steel Producers Association described the US steel tariff increase to 50% as “a blow to Canadian industry”.

Canada reacts strongly to tariff change

Catherine Cobden, President and CEO of the Canadian Steel Producers Association (CSPA), reacted strongly to the Trump Administration's decision to raise US steel tariffs to 50%. In a statement released on May 31, 2025, Cobden highlighted the impact of this decision on the Canadian steel industry.

In her statement, Cobden expressed strong condemnation of the Trump Administration's decision, emphasizing that this step excludes half of Canada's domestic production from the US market.

“The time for the Canadian government to act is now” stated Cobden, adding that raising steel tariffs to these levels would cause serious disruptions and negative consequences for the integrated supply chains between the two countries and for customers on both sides of the border, and urged the Canadian government to take immediate action.

“Retaliatory steel tariffs should be fully reinstated in response to the American tariffs and new tariffs should be imposed to stop unfairly traded steel from entering Canada,” Cobden noted, emphasizing that the steel sector is of strategic importance to Canada.

Stating that they contribute to sectors such as energy, automotive, manufacturing and defense and employ hundreds of thousands of people, Cobden noted that the Trump Administration's decision is “a blow that could have irreparable consequences.”
