The company plans to indefinitely decommission the No. 4 galvanizing line at its Flemalle plant, which was previously idle in 2014-2018. due to unfavorable market conditions. According to Liberty, galvanizing lines No. 4 and 5 at this facility are now loaded no more than 30-40% anyway.
Earlier, Liberty negotiated with the government of Wallonia (one of Belgium's three regions) to offer a local state investment firm to buy 49% of Liberty Liege and provide a 37m euro loan to fully load the businesses. However, a positive result was never achieved.
Liberty also states that the closure of its Belgian galvanizing line is due to the resumption of work by Italian rolled steel producer Liberty Magona, which bought a car from Romanian steelworks Liberty Galati. The capacity of the Italian plant is 450 thousand tons of commercial galvanized steel and 100 thousand tons of painted steel per year.
