Brazil's Itaipu tech park xplores green hydrogen applications

Itaipu tech park is focusing on green hydrogen innovation, using a 1kg/hour green hydrogen plant to study synthetic fuels, power generation, and energy efficiency.

The plant, funded by the power sector, is expanding its focus to hard-to-abate areas like truck and bus transportation, mining, and some sectors of the chemical sector.

The hydrogen plant uses solar power, batteries, and energy from the Itaipu power plant. It compresses t

he fuel for storage and does not produce hydrogen for sale but can make it available for research or technological development. The park has partnered with the International Renewable Energy Centre (Cibiogas) to produce biosyncrude, a synthetic crude using hydrogen as a feedstock. The Itaipu center aims to study synthetic jet fuel in the future and offers services for analyzing companies' operations to evaluate the technical and financial viability of producing synthetic fuels.

Brazil is preparing a new legal framework for hydrogen, with a new bill expected to be introduced and approved by congress by the end of this year.
