Big River Steel, a subsidiary of U.S. Steel Corp., has become the first steel mill in the world to receive the ResponsibleSteel Certified Steel designation for its entire product line. This certification emphasizes Big River Steel's adherence to stringent standards in two key areas: responsible sourcing of raw materials and efforts to decarbonize operations at the site level. The facility, located in Osceola, Arkansas, operates as an electric arc furnace (EAF) mill, which is recognized for its high recycled content in steel production.
ResponsibleSteel is a global certification initiative designed to ensure steel is produced in a sustainable and ethical manner, supporting the industry's transition toward lower emissions. For Big River Steel, meeting the certification requirements means demonstrating progress in areas like reducing carbon emissions and sourcing materials responsibly. U.S. Steel has focused on minimizing the environmental impact by using a supply chain that includes raw materials like iron ore pellets from its Minnesota operations, which are then processed into pig iron for steel production.
Big River Steel also incorporates up to 90% recycled metals in its production processes. According to Dan Brown, Chief Operating Officer at Big River Steel, transparency in decarbonization efforts and close cooperation with suppliers and the local community play a crucial role in meeting the certification's standards and ensuring the production of more sustainable steel.
