BGH Edelstahl and Primetals Technologies unveil new power solution for electrical steel

BGH Edelstahl and Primetals Technologies have successfully completed the first melting tests of the Active Power Feeder system installed on BGH’s electric arc furnace (EAF) in Siegen, Germany.

BGH Edelstahl and Primetals Technologies unveil new power solution for electrical steel

According to the planned schedule, the tests showed that the system reliably supported furnace operations.

The Active Power Feeder stands out as a sustainability-focused new power solution for electrical steel production. The system uses an innovative power control architecture developed by Primetals Technologies together with patented and proven medium-voltage modular multilevel converter (MMC) technology.

Compared with conventional solutions, the Active Power Feeder is reported to reduce energy consumption and significantly lower grid flicker. It also delivers shorter energy supply times than static synchronous compensator (STATCOM) technology. The system provides high power quality that meets utility requirements, while enabling low electrical losses and high furnace efficiency.

Primetals Technologies integrated the system into BGH Edelstahl’s existing EAF infrastructure using a container-based design. Installed on a rooftop approximately 200 meters away, the system offers flexible installation even in confined spaces. Extensive pre-testing was conducted to ensure a smooth commissioning process. The solution can be easily integrated into both existing and new EAF facilities.

The BGH installation includes two parallel modular multilevel converters. The second converter was installed in December 2025 and began commissioning in January 2026. Both units are expected to operate in parallel at full capacity by mid-2026.

BGH produces high-quality stainless steels and special alloys, offering a broad product range including small-batch and customized production. The company aims to reduce Scope 1 and Scope 2 CO₂ emissions by 42% by 2030 compared with the 2021 baseline, and to cut Scope 3 emissions by 25% over the same period.
