It emphasized once again that domestic scrap processing is an important environmental and economic opportunity for Australia and therefore called for a ban on the export of unprocessed ferrous scrap metal.
ASI Chief Executive Officer Mark Cain said that Australian steelmakers can actually use their own materials when importing wrought iron scrap to meet the growing demand for steel.
The export ban will hold an additional 800,000 tons of processed scrap for the domestic market, which can reduce the steel industry's greenhouse gas emissions, and it will also be beneficial to reduce the damage of unprocessed scrap landfills to the offshore environment.
