ArcelorMittal to restart furnaces in Gijon and ACB

ArcelorMittal Group has resumed iron smelting at Blast Furnace A at the Gijon steel plant in Spain.

ArcelorMittal has also temporarily commissioned an electric arc furnace at the Acerà Compacta de Bizkaia (ACB) plant in Sestao in northern Spain.

The furnace in Gijon has been idle since September 2022 due to the fluctuation in the European flat rolled market. All this time in Gijón only furnace "B" was working. With two blast furnaces, the plant can produce up to 4.5 million tons of steel per year, but ArcellorMittal representatives say production volumes are currently in line with low demand.

The electric arc furnace at the ACB plant, which was shut down in August 2022, was only operational for one week. From February 11 to February 17, the business will produce a batch of pickled and oiled hot rolled steel for a large order.

After that, the furnace will be stopped again, but by 2025 ArcelorMittal plans to bring ACB to 1.6 million tons per year production using hydrogen metallurgy technologies. Thus, the plant could become the first steel plant with a zero carbon footprint in Europe.
