ArcelorMittal restarts Spanish ACB plant

ArcelorMittal Corporation, Europe's leading steel producer, has decided to gradually restart production at its Acería Compacta de Bizkaia (ACB) plant in Cestao, Spain, as of 1 May.

ArcelorMittal restarts Spanish ACB plant

An ArcelorMittal representative said that ACB has a six-day production period, which will be followed by a four-day shutdown period. The spokesperson did not comment on the volume of coil production but confirmed that production was lower than the planned capacity of the plant.

Acería Compacta de Bizkaia produces hot-rolled coil and corrosion-resistant steel in electric arc furnaces. The plant had been closed for maintenance in August 2022, but a projected decrease in steel demand forced ArcelorMittal to postpone restarting operations. In February 2023, the company announced the temporary resumption of steel production at ACB to fulfil an order.

Meanwhile, ArcelorMittal announced that it has not yet completed the process of evacuating blast furnace A at its Gijón plant following a fire on 22 March. An explosive cable had been placed in the blast furnace last week, but failed to destabilise the hardened material in the walls of the unit. Subsequent attempts by other means also failed. Explosives were also placed inside the BF this week in an attempt to break up the solidified pig iron. The company is currently evaluating the results of the explosions.
