ArcelorMittal is waiting for approval from the EU commission to be able to produce decarbonized steel at its Eisenhüttenstadt plant. According to André Körner, the company's managing director in Germany, the EU Commission has not deemed it appropriate to approve the investment volume of 1.9 billion euros for Bremen and Eisenhüttenstadt for the time being.
Jörg Steinbach, Minister of Economy of the German state of Brandenburg, is trying to persuade the EU Commission to switch to decarbonized steel production at ArcelorMittal's plant in Eisenhüttenstadt. While there is no set deadline for ArcelorMittal to receive approval, Steinbach said at the Economic Committee last Wednesday that this could have a positive medium-term return for the company.
At the same time, Steinbach also criticized the belated support measures taken for energy-intensive sectors in Brussels. In his speech, . "To be honest, everything takes too long in Brussels," he said. He especially emphasized that the steel industry is seriously affected by high energy prices. In addition, he complained about the expensiveness of natural gas and electricity prices. He asked the question of how long companies could hold out.
