ArcelorMittal Fos-sur-Mer blast furnace to continue idling

ArcelorMittal Méditerranée will temporarily close one of its two blast furnaces in Fos-sur-Mer. Blast furnace No. 1, currently idle for technical reasons, will not resume production until market consumption improves after maintenance.

"The demand situation will be reassessed until the end of the first quarter of 2024. During this time, compliance measures will be taken, prioritising staff training and measures to ensure the long-term viability of industrial facilities. Ensuring continuity of service for our customers remains our priority," the company said in the statement.

ArcelorMittal Méditerranée continues to invest in decarbonising the plant and ensuring its long-term viability. These investments include a future electric arc furnace as well as a €73 million ($77 million) ladle furnace under construction that will increase the use of recycled steel.

The new EAF will be operational from 2027 and will replace a blast furnace by the end of the decade. ArcelorMittal has two blast furnaces at Fos-sur-Mer.

The French government will support the entire project with an investment of €1.7 billion. ArcelorMittal and the French government signed a strategic partnership for these investments last year.
