Amazon's first electric delivery vans will hit the roads in Germany

E-commerce giant Amazon announced on Tuesday that as part of its long-term plans to electrify its transportation network, it will be deploying Rivian's first electric delivery vans in Germany in the coming weeks.

Amazon, aiming to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2040 in the fight against climate change, had previously announced a €1 billion investment over five years to electrify its delivery fleet in Europe, starting from October 2022.

Following the announcement, the company will begin deliveries in Germany using 300 electric vans designed by Rivian.

The 300 electric vans will join the existing fleet of thousands of electric delivery vans in Europe, including over 1,000 electric vans already operational in Germany.

Amazon has been testing pre-production vehicles from Rivian for deliveries in Europe since last year. These tests have allowed Rivian to continuously improve the vehicle's performance, safety, durability, driver satisfaction, and overall functionality by incorporating the latest technology features in various climates and geographies.

Amazon and Rivian have designed the vans to be shorter and narrower than their U.S. counterparts to better suit European cities.

In 2019, Amazon made a deal with Rivian, a U.S.-based electric vehicle manufacturer, to purchase 100,000 electric delivery vans that are expected to be fully deployed by 2024.
