Algoma Steel produces coal-free steel for the first time in over 120 years

Algoma Steel has successfully produced its first batch of coal-free steel, marking a major transition away from its coal-based production model that had been in place for more than 120 years.

Algoma Steel produces coal-free steel for the first time in over 120 years

The Canadian steelmaker, known as one of the country’s leading producers of hot and cold rolled steel plate and sheet, announced the successful first steel production at Unit One of its new state-of-the-art Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) project. This milestone follows more than ten days of successful arc testing and both individual and simultaneous testing of nine Q-One transformer modules.

The ignition of the first arc and the initial steel output represent a critical step in Algoma’s transformation journey, accelerating the company’s shift to green steel production with the potential to reduce carbon emissions by up to 70%.

Michael Garcia, President and CEO of Algoma Steel, stated, “We are proud to reach this critical milestone in what is Canada’s largest industrial decarbonization project. This moment is the result of years of rigorous planning, disciplined execution, and extraordinary effort since we broke ground in November 2021. Commissioning our first EAF unit during a time of commercial uncertainty shows our commitment to innovation and leadership. As we unlock the full potential of electric arc steelmaking, we are also opening doors to new opportunities.”

Volta™ Introduced

All steel products produced in Algoma’s EAFs will be marketed under the new “Volta” brand. Volta is designed to deliver the same high performance customers expect—but with significantly lower emissions. Thanks to Ontario’s clean electricity grid, Volta products are expected to reduce the company’s carbon footprint by up to 70%, contributing to the growth of a low-carbon economy.

The name “Volta” is a tribute to Alessandro Volta, the pioneer who first harnessed electricity.
