Algiers-Qatari Steel (AQS), which has successfully integrated its production operation despite the unfavorable market environment, started thermal tests last week for its second electric arc furnace (EAF) and continuous casting machine (CCM). The two plants, whose thermal tests have begun, are expected to produce 1.1 million tons of crude steel and 1.1 million tons of billets per year. Using domestic scrap and imported directly reduced iron (DRI) as raw materials, Algerian-Qatari Steel will be able to produce DRI for itself as of June, after the DRI facility, which is planned to produce 2.5 million tons per year, starts production.
