Under the agreement announced on 28 August 2026, John Cockerill India will be responsible for the design, manufacturing and supply of equipment for the facility, as well as supervision of erection, commissioning and performance testing. The project will comprise four major processing lines. The pickling line will remove scale and oxides from hot-rolled steel to prepare it for downstream processing, while the acid regeneration plant will enable the recovery and reuse of hydrochloric acid. The 6-high cold rolling mill will provide precise thickness control and high surface quality, while the galvanizing line will enable the production of corrosion-resistant coated steel products.
Once operational, the project is expected to increase A1 Iron & Steel’s capacity to produce value-added flat steel products for Tanzania and the wider East African market. The facility is expected to support demand from the construction, infrastructure, manufacturing and industrial sectors while strengthening the regional steel supply chain. The investment is also expected to contribute to job creation, technical skills development and the growth of local engineering, maintenance and supplier ecosystems.
For John Cockerill India, the contract represents an important order that strengthens the company’s international presence in steel processing equipment across Africa. The approximately INR 2 billion agreement is expected to contribute to the company’s international order book. The company also stated that the contract is not a related-party transaction and that it has no interest in A1 Iron & Steel Tanzania.
