Yamato Steel and SMS group have commissioned Japan’s first compact roll straightener

Yamato Steel Co. Ltd., one of the leading producers of beams and profiles, and SMS group have successfully commissioned Japan’s first compact roll straightener (CRS®).

Yamato Steel and SMS group have commissioned Japan’s first compact roll straightener

The equipment was supplied by SMS group and installed in 2024 at Yamato Steel’s heavy section mill in Himeji, Japan.

The new system modernized the mill with the CRS® 2000-9H straightening machine. This investment reflects Yamato Steel’s commitment to meeting market demands with high-quality products and efficient production processes.

First in Japan: CRS® 2000-9H

The CRS® 2000-9H straightening machine, used for the first time in Japan, features nine rolls and a 2,000-millimeter pitch. The system is designed to straighten heavy sections and sheet piles by applying controlled bending forces, significantly improving both operational efficiency and product quality.

SMS group’s delivery scope included engineering services, equipment mainly supplied from its own workshops, a new L1 automation system, assembly and commissioning support, and spare parts supply.

Advanced technology and sustainability

The CRS® design supports the straightening rolls from both sides, ensuring precise and symmetrical force application. This structure provides homogeneous product quality, reduces residual stress in finished products, and extends the service life of the straightening discs.

Each of the nine straightening rolls is individually driven, and the upper rolls can be precisely adjusted under load using a hydraulic system, enhancing adaptability and straightening accuracy during production.

SMS group’s Load Sharing Control (LSC) system offers high energy efficiency with lower installed power and reduces the risk of overloading. It also minimizes residual stresses in the finished products, improving product properties.

Efficiency through automation

Yamato Steel’s CRS® 2000-9H model features a fully automatic system that changes all nine rolls simultaneously and includes a “chamber size adjustment” function for the straightening discs. These innovations reduce downtime, shorten maintenance and setup times, lower operating costs, and ensure production continuity.

A new step in a long-term partnership

This project exemplifies SMS group’s approach of providing integrated solutions tailored to customer needs. The commissioning of the CRS® system further strengthens the long-standing collaboration between Yamato Steel and SMS group.
