Drewry’s World Container Index, which provides international maritime data and consulting services, increased by 4% in the week ending October 31. According to the company’s data, the spot freight rate for a 40’ container increased from USD 3,095 to USD 3,213 during this period. The index showed a 129% increase compared to the same period last year.
The average freight rate since the beginning of 2024 was calculated as USD 4,017, which is well above the average of the last decade of USD 2,839. Prices are 126% above the pre-pandemic level of USD 1,420 and 69% below the peak of USD 10,377 during the pandemic.
Looking at the mobility between routes, freight rates on the Shanghai-Rotterdam route increased by 8% to USD 3,396. In contrast, rates on the Rotterdam-Shanghai route decreased by 1% to USD 543.
Freight rates on the Shanghai-Los Angeles route increased by 1% to 4,839 USD, while the Los Angeles-Shanghai route saw a similar increase from 710 USD to 718 USD.
On the Shanghai-New York route, freight rates decreased by 25 USD to 5,241 USD. On the New York-Rotterdam route, rates decreased by USD 1 to USD 760, while on the Rotterdam-New York route, rates increased by USD 1 to USD 2,664.
